If you’re booking a colour appointment in Sydney CBD, chances are you’ve already come across two very different techniques: balayage and foils. Both can deliver gorgeous, dimensional colour, but they work in completely different ways – and here in Sydney, where humidity, salt water and relentless UV exposure all take a toll on hair, the “right” choice often comes down to more than just the look you’re after.
At La Libertine Hair, we get asked this question almost daily. So we’ve put together a proper breakdown of how each technique works, how they hold up against Sydney’s climate, and how to decide which one is right for you.
What’s the Difference Between Balayage and Foils?
Balayage is a freehand colouring technique where colour is painted directly onto sections of hair, usually concentrated through the mid-lengths and ends. The result is a soft, sun-kissed gradient with no harsh lines – it’s designed to look like hair that’s naturally lightened over time.
Foils (also called highlights) involve sectioning hair and applying colour that’s then wrapped in foil to process. This gives the colourist much more control over placement and saturation, producing more defined, consistent streaks of colour from root to tip.

Neither technique is “better” across the board – they’re simply built for different outcomes, and that’s where Sydney’s climate starts to matter.
How Sydney’s Climate Affects Each Technique
Humidity and Frizz
Sydney’s humidity (particularly over summer) affects how colour reads in the hair. Foils tend to create a more structured, graphic pattern, which can look slightly more obvious if hair frizzes or loses its shape in humid weather. Balayage’s soft, blended placement is more forgiving – because there’s no sharp line between colours, a bit of frizz or wave doesn’t disrupt the overall effect nearly as much.
Sun Exposure and Lightening
Here’s something a lot of clients don’t expect: Sydney’s UV levels are genuinely intense, and hair that’s already been lightened – whether through balayage or foils – will continue to lift slightly from natural sun exposure.
Balayage is designed to mimic this sun-lightened look in the first place, so the ongoing effect of the sun tends to work with the colour rather than against it. Foiled highlights, especially if they’re placed in fine, regular sections, can show more obvious regrowth contrast as the rest of the hair lightens unevenly from sun exposure around them.
Beach and Pool Time
If you’re regularly in the ocean or chlorinated pools (very on-brand for a Sydney summer), both techniques will be affected by salt water and chlorine, which can dry hair out and shift colour tone – particularly on blondes.
The difference is in regrowth management: because balayage is blended and grown out gradually, it tends to need less frequent touch-ups when your hair is being exposed to the elements most. Foils generally need more regular root maintenance to keep the pattern looking crisp.
Maintenance: Which One Suits Your Lifestyle?
This is often the deciding factor for our Sydney CBD clients, many of whom are balancing busy work schedules with their hair appointments.
Balayage maintenance:
- Regrowth is soft and gradual, so appointments can typically be spaced 10-16 weeks apart
- Lower overall maintenance – ideal for clients who want low-fuss colour between visits
- Great option if you want to ease into a lighter colour over time, rather than a dramatic change in one session
Foils maintenance:
- Regrowth is more noticeable at the root line, so touch-ups are usually needed every 6-10 weeks
- Offers more precise, consistent colour coverage – ideal if you want a very specific tone or pattern maintained
- Better suited to clients who enjoy regular salon visits and want tightly controlled colour
Which Should You Choose?
As a general guide:
- Choose balayage if you want a low-maintenance, naturally sun-kissed look that holds up well through a Sydney summer of beach days, humidity and UV exposure.
- Choose foils if you want more precise, uniform colour and don’t mind more frequent appointments to maintain the root line.
- Not sure? A lot of our CBD clients actually combine the two – foils through the root area for brightness, with balayage through the lengths for a softer, lower-maintenance grow-out. Our colourists can talk you through a custom approach based on your hair type, lifestyle and how often you’re realistically able to get back in the chair.
