Blonde hair is gorgeous, but it’s also one of the highest-maintenance colours you can wear – especially if you’re juggling a busy Sydney CBD schedule between salon visits.
We get asked the same questions on repeat at La Libertine Hair, so we’ve pulled together the answers in one place.
How long can I go between blonde touch-ups?
Most of our clients book in every 6-8 weeks for a root touch-up, though this depends on how fast your hair grows and how dramatic the contrast is between your natural colour and your blonde.
If you’re after a lower-maintenance look, ask us about balayage or a softer lived-in blonde next time you’re in – it grows out far more gracefully than an all-over bleach, which means fewer trips to the salon without sacrificing the overall effect.
My blonde keeps turning brassy – what’s going on?
Brassiness is the most common complaint we hear from blonde clients, and it’s almost always down to one (or both) of these:
- Hard water and chlorine gradually oxidise the colour, pulling warm, yellow or orange tones to the surface.
- UV exposure from the Sydney sun fades the cooler tones faster than the warm ones, leaving brassiness behind.
A purple shampoo used once or twice a week will keep those tones in check between visits – just don’t overdo it, as too much can leave hair looking flat or slightly violet.

What’s the difference between purple shampoo and purple conditioner?
Purple shampoo does the heavy lifting – it’s more pigmented and designed to actively counteract brassiness. Purple conditioner is gentler and better suited to maintaining tone rather than correcting it. If your blonde is quite light or you’re prone to brassiness, use a purple shampoo weekly and a purple conditioner for in-between washes.
How often should I wash my hair to protect my blonde?
Washing less often is one of the simplest ways to extend the life of your colour. Every wash strips a small amount of pigment, so where possible:
- Stretch washes to every second or third day
- Use a dry shampoo in between to manage oil at the roots
- Wash with lukewarm or cool water rather than hot – heat opens the hair cuticle and accelerates colour fade
Do I really need colour-safe shampoo?
Yes. Regular shampoo is formulated to strip oil and build-up, which also strips colour molecules. A sulphate-free, colour-safe shampoo and conditioner is one of the best investments you can make to protect your blonde and reduce how often you need a toner refresh.
My ends feel dry and straw-like – what helps?
Blonde hair, particularly if it’s lightened, loses moisture and protein faster than your natural colour. Between visits:
- Use a weekly deep conditioning mask or treatment
- Apply a leave-in treatment or hair oil to the mid-lengths and ends before heat styling
- Reduce heat tool use where you can, or always use a heat protectant
If your ends are consistently dry no matter what you try at home, it’s often a sign you’re due for a trim or a bond-repair treatment in-salon – let us know at your next visit and we can assess it properly.
Can I colour-correct brassiness myself at home?
We’d recommend against trying to fix significant brassiness or colour build-up with box-dye toners or at-home purple treatments beyond a shampoo or conditioner.
These can over-correct, leave patchy results, or react unpredictably with your existing colour – and then cost more time and money to fix in-salon than if you’d come in for a quick toner refresh in the first place.
If your blonde has drifted further than a purple shampoo can manage, book in for a toner service rather than reaching for a home kit.
What should I use to protect my hair over summer?
Sydney CBD clients heading to the beach or spending time outdoors should add a UV-protectant spray to their routine, and rinse hair with fresh water as soon as possible after swimming in chlorine or salt water.
Both chlorine and salt water are notorious for turning blonde hair green or brassy, and the fresh-water rinse makes a real difference.
Is there anything I should bring up at my next appointment?
Always mention:
- Any new brassiness, dullness or tone shifts you’ve noticed
- Changes in dryness, breakage or elasticity
- Any new hair products, treatments or medications that might affect how your colour is taking
This helps us fine-tune your formula and recommend the right at-home care for your specific hair, rather than a generic routine.
